My Journal #04
Thanks for getting your entry in so quickly Khaled.
My comments in blue below J
Things I learned in the last two lessons:
As a student
These two lessons were useful. As a student I learned many things which will help me in my studies. One of the things that I learned is three different ways of creating new vocabulary records. These three types of records are Under topic, Types of and Parts of. Iím sure these techniques will help me memorizing the new vocabulary as I add them to my list. I canít tell which one is the best right now because I didnít try them, but I will soon. Another thing I learned is presentation techniques and the way I can combine them to form a good presentation aiming my studentsí benefits. Also the way these techniques will suit class settings.
Itíll be interesting to see how you get on with the vocabulary records and which you find best for which words.
I am also looking forward to seeing your presentation combinations later in this entry J
As a future teacher
As a teacher I learned how important it is to be flexible with my lesson plan. This was when I saw you changing in your lesson plan according to the studentsí needs and the lesson issues.
Did you think I was correct to change my plan and reduce my aims? Why?
Iím sure it was the best thing to do at that time because itís the quality that is important not the quantity. With your decision we were able to understand 3 of them clearly.
Thanks Ė this is valuable feedback for me J
Presentation techniques are other things I learned from these lessons. These techniques will help me in my future career. The vocabulary record system that I learned is going to be useful, too. I can pass it to my future students so they will also get the benefit of knowing these techniques.
Yes. Would you pass them all the vocabulary techniques as I am doing with you? Or would you, as the teacher, decide which technique is best for which group of words?
Iíll pass them all because they have the right to decide with technique will be more useful for themselves.
An excellent justification. Remember though that your lower level students may not be able to process them all at once J
The two combinations we had in our group:
PowerPoint / Illustration / Pictures / Explanation
To have a presentation using powerpoint slides with pictures in it and the teacher in front explaining. This is a useful technique to teach vocabulary meanings and technical definitions.
Yes. A good standard technique. What would your backup be should the PowerPoint not be available due to a power-out or something similar?
If the problem was from the computer then I can prepare overhead projector materials. Also I can go to my class with a hard copy of the slides in case of emergencies.
Hard copy of slides is an excellent idea J
Situational / Elicitation / Case studies
Demonstrating a situation in front of the students and elicit their point of view of the situation and then allow them to study the case they just saw. This technique will work when we have new rule or law to be issued. Also we as future teachers can get benefit of this to study cases of studentsí problems we might face in our career.
Interesting combination. It is more of a lesson combination than a presentation combination. What about a situational presentation that elicits the Ďwhat is happening / why are you doing thisí from the students while simultaneously setting up and presenting a longer (1 month for example) case study? Does that make more sense as a presentation combination? What do you think?
I think it is a good combination, but as you said in the class there is no wrong or right in these combinations. The only person who can decide if itís going to work or not is the teacher.
The most important thing is to bear in mind the subject which the student must learn, then decide the presentation technique that will fit in the lesson.
Definitely J Great answer J
I will have an individual work presentation. My presentation will combine the following techniques demonstration, illustration, pictures, video and reading text. I canít tell exactly the way I will present my mini teaching because I have to finish preparing the material Iíll use. As soon as I have my material ready I will send you the description of it.
Sounds very interesting. What do you have to do from a classroom management preparation perspective? What is your back up if the video should not work?
Finally I have my material ready!!!
My presentation has a slight change
It will be Web-based, guided task, reading text, pictures and demonstrating video.
Sounds very interesting J
It will be software which I prepared to explain how to create a Column Chart in MS Excel. I uploaded this file on my webpage. I sent the URL by email to everybody and told them what to do with the file until we get together in the class on Saturday. In this presentation there will be a description of how to create the chart. I made it step by step to make it easier to my colleagues to follow the instructions. Regarding your question about the video, I created my presentation with screensí snaps. So my colleagues will be able to do the guided exercise even if they couldnít operate the video which I think it is way far because the video will be on their laptops not on the TV. J
I have downloaded it already and am looking forward to the lesson J
PS: Please download the file which is ďlesson01.exeĒ from this URL:
Thanks Khaled J
